I’m pretty new when it comes to messing with HD things, codecs and the like, but I was wondering, is there a way to knock down the CPU usage when playing HD video? I have bluray mkv files, and they skip during intense moments or times of high load or something. When I started, I couldn’t watch any intensely HD clips at all, the picture would freeze/jump every 4-5 seconds and the audio would catch as well. Following some instructions I found online, I changed some settings, downloaded a codec pack named CCCP, and installed windows media player classic – home cinema. At first, I was absolutely pleased. The images seemed to flow smoothly, and the sound was good. I was using about 3-20% of my CPU, as opposed to 50-80%. A day or two later, my problem returned, only now it’s just sort of when things get intense. But the CPU load always stays around 40-60% now. Is there something that undid itself? Is there something else I need to do? Please help, as the majority of things involved here are a bit over my head, and while I’m willing to learn, it’s a big leap from where I’m standing.
I was on a gentleman’s site, "http://iphonedaily.net/other-news/hardware-acceleration-h264-movie-hdtv-low-cpu-usage.html" trying to follow his directions on Hardware acceleration, but I don’t know if it’s safe to download the Pure Codec pack when I also have CCCP, and have changed some options. I’m really stuck, but I really love High Definition videos… Help!
Oh, right, sorry, my laptop is an HP HDX 16 Notebook. Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, P7450 @ 2.13 GHz, 4.00 GB of RAM.
That’s what’s in my System Window. My laptop has always run everything I’ve needed very well, which is one of the reasons I’m concerned about this… you’d think it should run things fine.. My card is a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT. Hopefully this helps a bit more.
If your machine isnt a decent one, no amount of settings or codecs can help you playback bluray mkv’s.

Have you considered an external Media Player which does mean that you would have to watch it on a TV yet the converters built into the newer units are far better for video as well as audio.
It’s just a thought I love watching some of the Anime which is out there yet the massive video of one of them was over 8.5 GBs with a 264 Mkv file that was incredible on my computer.
Either look for Media Players or Network Media Tanks
Many are out there low end yet good is the WD Media Player for a start.

Have you tried the latest DivX Plus Software yet? DivX has one of the fastest (and free) H.264 software decoders. We just released an update last week that also has optional DXVA hardware acceleration for supported cards. You can get more details about this at DivX Labs:
http://labs.divx.com/DivX-H264-Decoder-DXVA
Also, if you’re running Windows 7, the DivX Plus Codec Pack includes an MKV splitter and Media Foundation components that’ll give you hardware acceleration through Windows Media Center and allow streaming of MKV to Xbox 360.
Hit me up on DivX Labs if you have more questions.
