difference between file format and codec?

ok i am a little confused what all these modern terms for video and audio files mean. could someone tell me the answer to the question in the title. there is a list below of some examples of words i dont understand and what the use of them is

divx
xvid
h264
x264
avi
mkv

FIle formats are containers that store audio/video information. The codecs (COmpressor DECompressor) actually encode the individual A/V frame/fields. Codec has nothing whatsoever to do with optics and electronics manufacturer Kodak

AVI is an example of a format, H.264 is an example of a codec. XVID is a codec.

DIVX is a range of products that includes both codecs and file-formats

x264 is an implementation of H.264

MKV is a file-format.
